Artist’s conception of the University of Miami’s new Biomedical Research Institute Building, slated to open in 2008.

In the spring of 2008, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute will open a new research unit on the 5th floor of a new laboratory research tower that is now under construction on the university’s medical campus. The building will house research groups from different departments with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

Bascom Palmer’s new unit will be the Center for Ophthalmic Innovation. The goal of the center is to bring together ideas, people, and cutting-edge technology from diverse backgrounds and venues – across medicine, biotechnology, and biomedical engineering – to address practical solutions for unmet needs in ophthalmology.

The new research tower is part of the university’s research expansion effort under Momentum, the campaign for the University of Miami.
