Application Information

1. The residency program at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in affiliation with Jackson Memorial Hospital , participates in the Ophthalmology Matching Program.
   
   
2. Processing of fellowship applications usually begins 6 months prior to the beginning of the fellowship. We participate in each subspecialty that has an Ophthalmology Matching Program. The neuro-ophthalmology fellowship does not participate in the Ophthalmology Matching Program, and applicants are encouraged to apply 8 months or earlier prior to the beginning of the fellowship.
   
   
3. Foreign medical school graduates applying for either the residency or fellowship program must pass the FMGEMS/USMLE in order to qualify for a training program in the United States and prior to review of applications. Fellows must be able to obtain a Florida medical license.
   
   
4. The following are requirements for residency and fellowship positions:

   Applications for the residency are processed through the Ophthalmology Matching Program (via the Central Application Service).  

   Fellowship applicants must submit a Bascom Palmer Eye Institute application and documents directly to the program. Even if a curriculum vitae is being submitted, please fill out the application form in its entirety. This is a must for your application to be considered. In addition, a handwritten autobiographical sketch is required.

5. When your application is complete, you will be notified. If you have failed to receive such notice after a reasonable period of time has elapsed, please contact us inquiring as to the status of your application.
   
   
6. Candidates selected for interviews will be notified by the Committee after applications are reviewed. Please note that the Selection Committee initiates all interviews and will so inform the applicant. Interviews are not granted at the applicant's request. We interview in December (18 months in advance for the current available residency positions), and in October/November for the current available fellowship positions. Due to the number of applicants it is generally not possible to inform applicants that they will not be offered an interview. 7. It is important that you notify us of any change of address and phone number (including zip code and area code) so that records may be kept up to date. Should you decide to accept a position elsewhere or withdraw, we would appreciate receiving a note or phone call to that effect so that we may withdraw your application from consideration.
   
   
8. To those applicants concerned about internships, we would like to point out that we have no preference as to the type of internship. However, your internship should be with a University-affiliated teaching hospital.
