Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine mobilized their resources to provide help to the victims of the Hurricane Katrina. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has a special connection to New Orleans because our namesake, Dr. Bascom Headon Palmer, the legendary Miami ophthalmologist, was a graduate of the College of Medicine at Tulane University.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Vision Van

The Bascom Palmer Vision Van, a fully equipped mobile eye clinic, went to the Gulf Coast to help community ophthalmologists provide aid and comfort to hurricane victims and evacuees. A team of Bascom Palmer ophthalmologists and technicians were onsite in Baton Rouge and New Orleans to help first respondes and evacuees with every type of eye care need, from new glasses, to medication, to removing foreign bodies from the eyes.
